The Center continues to support long-established mentor community courts across the country. This reporting period, Center staff conducted at least one individual, substantive call with each of the four mentor courts: South Dallas Community Court; Orange County Collaborative Courts; Olympia Community Court; and Spokane Community Court. During these calls, Center staff inquired about operational and programmatic updates to best understand which mentor courts are suitable to support other community court practitioners based on requests for support.
Center staff also responded to calls for support from mentor courts. Notably, the Orange County Collaborative Courts requested that the Center facilitate training for their staff and stakeholders during an annual training day in May 2023. Center staff presented a virtual training on trauma-informed courtroom practices and procedural justice for a large audience of 100+ people that came from diverse professional backgrounds.
Center staff also facilitated networking connections between mentor courts and the current community court cohort to spread best practices. For example, when the Director of the Jersey City Community Court expressed a desire to rethink virtual court appearances, Center staff recommended she observe Olympia Community Court’s virtual hearings and meet with their director to discuss dynamics. Center staff facilitated communication between the two sites to encourage peer-to-peer learning. The Community Court Coordinator and Presiding Judge from Spokane also worked with Center staff to support the current cohort of sites by presenting during the Center’s March 2023 all-site webinar on needs assessment best practices.
