As a condition of funding, the NDCRC will conduct the Painting the Current Picture survey every two years on behalf of the Bureau of Justice Assistance. Data collection for the next round of this survey began in February 2023, requesting data for calendar year 2022. Surveys were developed for thirteen different court types, and a different survey was constructed based on whether the recipient state had a data Management Information System (MIS). A total of twenty-six surveys were developed, and the NDCRC has provided a guide for completing each individual survey. States that operate these systems had surveys sent only to the statewide treatment court coordinator; states that do not have a MIS received a "hybrid" survey to be distributed to local coordinators. Data has been requested at the program level to allow for more in-depth analysis of participant demographics, program entrance and exit points, and substances frequently used by participants. The survey was initially distributed on January 31, 2023; after several extensions, the deadline for data collection is July 31, 2023. NDCRC staff have conducted ongoing phone and email outreach in an attempt to increase response rate at the state and local levels.
