This learning community will assist school leaders in creating and strengthening a site crisis navigation team and engage participants in meaningful peer-to-peer learning. Participants will share successes and barriers and discuss the implementation and expansion of trauma-informed, resilience-oriented school crisis navigation.
At the time of a crisis, it is challenging for schools to organize an effective crisis navigation response and still maintain the required long-range perspective and day-to-day operations.
They may find themselves in the situation having underestimated the full impact of the crisis, feeling overwhelmed by the extent and magnitude of it, or being systematically unprepared.
Thus, it is essential for schools to have a preplanned, systematic organizational model to direct decisions should a crisis occur. This model must:
Anticipate the outcomes of a crisis and identify the ways it will affect individuals from various racial/ethnic backgrounds and their respective communities.
Identify and plan how to use the broad range of skills and knowledge represented by those on the school crisis response team, including those of collaborating professions, such as mental health and juvenile justice.
Anticipate the future needs of the school population and develop plans to meet those needs.
