The workshop will present information on the potential of using data gathered through a state’s BJA-sponsored Harold Rogers Prescription Drug Monitoring Program to combat communities’ struggles with opioid use. Attendees will also have the opportunity to learn about existing partnerships in Maryland between law enforcement and the parole and probation community. These partnerships have allowed for collaboration and discussion around the results of substance abuse testing, and the relationships between releases and community services related to substance abuse and mental health. The workshop will also provide an opportunity for participants to create plans for how they might collaborate holistically with their law enforcement counterparts to use these data.
The abuse of opioids, a group of drugs that includes heroin and prescription painkillers, has had a devastating impact on public health and safety in this country. As probation and parole agencies become increasingly connected—with other government agencies and with rich data sources—new opportunities and challenges arise to address this urgent issue. The U.S. Department of Justive, Bureau of Justice Assistance, in partnership with our grantees, has gleaned lessons about these opportunities and challenges. This workshop will demonstrate how supervision agencies can make use of various data sources and collaborate with their law enforcement counterparts to create opportunities for prevention and for improving mental health, substance abuse, and reentry outcomes.
