In this workshop presenters will explain the requirements and differences between the PREA Standards related to victim advocacy, reporting and emotional support services, analyzing the nuances and interplay between these standards. Presenters will also discuss promising ways to build relationships with community-based victim advocacy organizations so that agencies can comply with the PREA standards requirement to make available outside confidential support services. This session will provide participants information to better understand who community-based advocates are and what they do. The session will also share practices for ensuring that incarcerated survivors have access to support services from community-based organizations. The discussion will include the common challenges that arise when establishing and implementing MOUs, and the importance of confidentiality of communications with advocates. Presenters will clarify the differences between the support services standard (115.53) and the reporting standards (115.51 and 115.54) and will explain how advocacy services support a facility?s reporting culture. Participants will leave the session with a better understanding of key PREA Standards, what support services are required by the Standards, and how to establish those services or evaluate existing services and make improvements.
