Kenneth Akini, Chief Judge of Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa & Chippewa Indians Tribal Court reached out the TLPI on 02/17/2023 to request technical assistance for the Michigan Tribal State Court Forum . Judge Akini contacted TLPI because of our work in the areas of tribal-state collaborations and tribal-state court forums. Judge Akini is chairing the Michigan Tribal, State, Federal Judicial Forum’s Subcommittee on Funding and the Forum would like TLPI to provide technical assistance on funding opportunities for tribal-state court forums. The Forum generally meets and discusses child welfare and other cross-jurisdictional issues. The Forum has two in-person meetings per year, two virtual meetings, and several subcommittee meetings. Catherine Retana, Tribal Law Specialist at TLPI responded to Judge Akini and provided BJA funding resources as well as additional resources under the Office on Violence Against Women (OVW), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Court Improvement Program, and the State Justice Institute and their state bar association. Catherine also provided additional TLPI resources and publications on tribal state court forums and on funding utilized by other state court forums.
