The last decade has brought about the pioneering initiatives toward enhancing wellness for those who serve in the correctional field. Correctional wellness is not only important in this field. It is essential to maintaining the health and wellness of those who serve in this specialized career. With the never-ending needs and responsibilities which exists in a 24/7 environment, it is challenging to find the time, and space, to encourage wellness for staff. As staff members working in this field, it can be especially challenging to break away from the hypervigilance of work role patterns and “being on”. Staff members may find it more uncomplicated, and even comfortable, to adopt the lifestyle to keep their “correctional hat” on, even when they are not at work. This tactic may be easier, but we know there are ways to live healthier and connect to our families and communities, and ourselves. It starts with intentionally creating the space for wellness. This workshop is specially designed to introduce strategies for departments to consider in encouraging wellness space at the worksites and as a part of the culture. We will review tactics which have been helpful within the Michigan Department of Corrections. How do you create space for wellness to be part of the conversation? How do you keep it part of the conversation? And how can a department encourage staff to create their own space for wellness? Along the way in this workshop, do not be surprised if you take away a few strategies for yourselves. We can each use more space for wellness.
Learning Objectives:
1. Identify challenges and benefits to integrating time and space for wellness.
2. Role of intentionality in wellness and creating a healthier normal in personal/professional lives.
3. Mitigating traumatic impacts with decompression areas and accessibility to wellness resources.
