Overview: COVID-19 has impacted many aspects of society, but one crucial and neglected aspect of managing the crisis of COVID-19 is in correctional facilities. A large number of justice-involved individuals reside in these correctional facilities, and it can be difficult to enforce social distancing and other mitigation efforts in this congregate setting. This workshop will inform and provide COVID-19 vaccine education for health professionals and justice-involved individuals to increase awareness and decrease spread of COVID-19 within correctional facilities and the community. The workshop will also explain psychosocial control mechanisms like misinformation, disinformation, and groupthink that can impact vaccine hesitancy. Psychological factors like pressure to conform, cognitive dissonance, denial, approach avoidance conflict, and confirmation bias will also be discussed.
Learning Objectives:
1. Participants will be able to reinforce confidence in the decision to get vaccinated.
2. Participants will be able to improve the condition of a patient care by increasing health professionals’ knowledge of COVID-19.
3. Participants will be able to navigate the health care challenges in COVID-19 management in the correctional population.
4. Participants will be able to summarize psychological factors and control mechanisms surrounding vaccine hesitancy.
