Tribal Grants Manager Mark Dyea participated in a Panel discussion on working with special populations as part of the New Mexico Court Officer Basic Training in Santa Fe, NM. In addition to Mr. Dyea’s discussion on working with the Native American population in a reentry setting there were other panelist that discussed working with Veterans, LGBTQI, and DWI Offenders.
Mr. Dyea’s portion of this discussion consisted of providing information on the number of, differences and similarities of Tribes in New Mexico. This discussion also provided information on the historical trauma experienced during their history. Based on the information provided Mr. Dyea provided the attendees with tips for working with the Native American population in a reentry setting include what to be mindful of when supervising Native Americans, particularly in regard to traditional and sacred items that are in many Tribal homes. During this discussion Mr. Dyea discussed the need for State Courts and their Officers to collaborate with Tribes to improve the reentry outcomes of this population.
