In July, CSG Justice Center staff engaged in extensive internal planning to determine milestones for the next 90 days of work on Justice Counts. The Justice Counts policy team began working in tandem on two separate tracks—the partner side and the state side. The partner-side track worked internally and with staff from Measures for Justice (MFJ) to advance plans for the Tier 2 metrics. CSG Justice Center staff also worked with project partner Recidiviz to continue adding Alpha Partners to test the digital infrastructure and to advance the work of the Technical Implementation Guides. Additionally, CSG Justice Center staff on the partner side worked with project partners to begin discussions about amending contracts to reflect the next phase of work. On the state side, CSG Justice Center staff worked with staff from BJA to evaluate the application from Nevada to become a Founding State. Nevada was preliminarily approved, and staff from the CSG Justice Center began planning Nevada’s onboarding, along with continuing outreach to other states that had expressed interest in Justice Counts. CSG Justice Center staff on the state side worked to develop additional promotional materials for the project and coordinate Justice Counts presentations at upcoming conferences. Lastly, CSG Justice Center staff conducted the first round of interviews for the two open project manager positions on the Justice Counts team.
New Insights:
After receiving the application from Nevada to become a Founding State at the end of June, CSG Justice Center staff determined that a set of criteria for evaluating states needed to be developed to efficiently and fairly consider all applicants using the same rubric. To do this, CSG Justice Center staff developed a scoring system that grades states on the involvement of various stakeholders, the availability of data, and the complexity of their system. Applying that system to Nevada, the CSG Justice Center and BJA were able to grant it provisional approval to become a Founding State, with final approval reserved for when there is buy-in to the project from all seven sectors in the state.
