The Partners will refine the curriculum for the proposed TPA based on BJA guidance and will solicit feedback from past TPA participants. The Partners will announce the academy dates electronically to probation, police, courts, and tribal leaders. A BJA approved participation application will be sent and reviewed with weight given to applicants who have one to three years of relevant experience; who have not previously attended the academy; who are from diverse tribes; who work within existing probation departments; and who are seeking to implement evidence based practices. We will select 30 learners and establish a waitlist. Curriculum includes: policy and guidelines, trauma informed approaches to caseload management; assessment tools; core correctional practices; the 8 principles of effective intervention; and motivational interviewing including practicum. We will provide officer safety training following the principles outlined in BJA’s VALOR Program for effective de-escalation and communication techniques. Instructors will be experienced practitioners who serve tribal communities. Attendees will receive academy/NCJTC policy and procedures that outline classroom and off campus expectations. A staff member will be with learners on campus, stay overnight at the same location, and facilitate optional, relevant Talking Circles, a traditional and effective way for Native American people to share and to solve problems, at night for interested learners. We will administer weekly pre/post-tests to gauge increases in learning. We will evaluate each instructor and module and use evaluation data to revise future offerings.

Due to COVID-19, with the permission of BJA, this academy was converted into an 18 week virtual academy. We have delivered 4 virtual academies, including this academy under this award.
