CSG Justice Center staff conducted a half-day grantee summit for the Children of Incarcerated Parents grantees. The summit covered a range of topics and included speakers from Santa Maria Hostel, a panel with individuals with lived experience, and Virginia Department of Corrections on family engagement. Presenters focused on Building a Comprehensive Continuum of Care for Families in Recovery. While parenting is a focus, it is important not to forget about the recovery side of programming and how that impacts our parents. The summit welcomed three speakers from Santa Maria Hostel in Houston, Texas to provide an overview of the impact of substance use on families, using data, personal reflections as people with lived experience, and drawing on the experiences of the families served. Participants heard from a panel of (unrelated) family members who shared their reentry journey. These three individuals shared their experiences as experienced caregivers of a child of an incarcerated parent, experienced incarceration as a parent, and experienced the incarceration of a parent. This panel will help projects think further about how they can engage families. Participants heard about adopting consistent and universal parenting curriculums, integrating staff training on trauma, children and visitation into agency's training agenda, and creating inviting and safe spaces for children and families.
