Trish Thackston, BJA Policy Advisor, reached out to TLPI to provide speaker support for a symposium coordinated by the Oklahoma Supreme Court and the Sovereignty Symposium, Inc. The event is titled “The Sovereignty Symposium XXXIV”. The Sovereignty Symposium XXXIV took place on June 8-9, 2022, at the Skirvin Hilton Hotel, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The Sovereignty Symposium was established to provide a forum in which ideas concerning common legal issues can be exchanged in a scholarly, non-adversarial environment.
The Sovereignty Symposium addressed a broad range of federal, tribal, and state issues bearing on the criminal law and process and its impacts on tribal nations, tribal jurisdiction, and state jurisdiction. The format accommodates the sharing of narratives, perspectives, and insights from tribal judges, tribal leaders, federal and state officials, Indian law scholars and practitioners, and members of the public who want to learn more about the most pressing criminal and civil justice issues facing Indian tribes and Native individuals in Oklahoma.
The full two-day program includes distinguished Indian law scholars, experts in criminal law, juvenile law, tribal law and jurisdiction, and state and tribal judges. In short, this event is critical to understanding multi-jurisdictional criminal and civil law and process, especially for tribal nations impacted by the recent McGirt v. Oklahoma Supreme court decision.
TLPI funded speaker, TLPI Consultant Judge William "Bill" Thorne. Judge Bill Thorne has unique expertise as both a tribal judge and a state judge and is a highly regarded expert in the field.
