Camp HAL (Healing After Loss) program is for children ages 4-6. Led by a licensed therapist who specializes in working with young children who are grieving. With support from NFFF staff and volunteers, the camp program uses play therapy and expressive therapy to help children express themselves in their natural language. Camp HAL includes a mix of activities appropriate for this age group, as well as some activities for children and parents together. Children stay with their parent overnight and when they are not in camp sessions.

Other Relevant Information

Held a virtual Camp HAL on April 9, for campers ages 4-8 whose firefighter parent, guardian, or sibling died in the line of duty. 10 Camp HAL campers (ages 4-6) zoomed in to participate in activities led by therapist Stephanie Heitkemper. A parents/guardian session was held via Zoom on April 7. A Camp HAL Survey was conducted and 100 % felt the information presented will be useful and was beneficial to their children’s healing process. Comment from a parent: “The thoughtfulness in the delivery with the children and time is so well worth it. These sessions have opened conversations with my children and helped them realize they are not alone in this journey of growing up without their daddy.”
