Catherine Retana and Heather Valdez Freedman coordinated and provided introductory call with TLPI Consultant Judge William Thorne for tribal state collaboration and tribal state court forum planning and implementation. Amy Hernandez (Domestic Violence Program Coordinator and Justice Courts Program Coordinator, Utah State Courts) , and Bridget Koza, J.D. (Court Improvement Program Director, Utah State Courts) were present. During the call, we discussed some background on the Utah Tribal State Court Forum, their Vision and Goals, where the current planning team was in the planning stages, and we discussed and disbursed TLPI resources and additional services. Amy and Bridgette expressed that their vision would be to create a forum that could possibly address both ICWA and DV issues. Judge Thorne is going to provide Amy and Bridget with contact information for the Native Bar Association in Utah (ICWA primary focus), the University of Utah School of Law Dean, the National Child Welfare Workforce initiative ( Baltimore), and a potential judge who can take on a leadership within the Utah judiciary, Eighth District Court Judge Keith Eddington. Catherine sent out the notes from the call along with the resources discussed including the Crossing the Bridge Publication and WalkingOnCommonGround.org. Catherine also sent Amy and Bridgette a letter of support from TLPI expressing that TLPI is willing to provide further TTA in the future (contingent on additional BJA funding being available). On 12/27/2021, Amy emailed Catherine that have been having trouble hiring a tribal liaison but would like to possibly schedule a meeting in February 2021 once the liaison position is filled.
