CJI staff supported the Criminal Justice Reinvestment Working Group (CJRWG) in hosting two roundtable discussions with Nebraskans who have been directly impacted by the criminal justice system, as well as those who provide care or services to directly impacted persons. The first discussion took place at the Heartland Workforce Solutions Center in Omaha, and the second took place virtually over Zoom. The purpose of the roundtable discussions was to provide system-impacted individuals and reentry service providers with an overview of the JRI process along with an update on the progress of the Working Group to date, as well as to gather and synthesize the priorities of the roundtable participants in order to inform the policy development phase of the Working Group’s process. In total, twenty-seven (27) Nebraskans who were directly impacted or who work closely with such individuals attended either the in-person roundtable or the virtual meeting hosted on the same evening. Nineteen (19) individuals attended the in-person meeting in Omaha, and eight attended the virtual discussion. Both Roundtable meetings were facilitated by Jasmine Harris, an established, well-known criminal justice reform advocate from Omaha, who partnered with CJI. Participants identified several key themes for the Working Group to be aware of as they relate to experiences prior to incarceration, during incarceration, and following incarceration when an individual is reentering the community, all of which were summarized in a report that was provided by CJI to the Working Group in December.
