The Law Enforcement/First Responder Diversion and Referral Mentoring Initiative provides communities interested in starting diversion or referral programs the opportunity to learn from established or innovative programs that have shown success in meeting the treatment needs of individuals with a substance use disorder, and in some cases an overdose. Eight sites have been chosen to act as mentors for newer programs that are trying to establish a first responder diversion program.
During site visits, mentors will provide opportunities for observation and peer-to-peer exchanges, including opportunities to observe the law enforcement/first responder diversion or referral program in action and allowing mentee sites to engage with program personnel. Foundations Family Medicine in Freetown IN is interested in the mentoring initiative.
From the applicant: "I hope to learn some of the steps required to start a Quick Response Team in a rural area. I also hope to gain knowledge on how the process works from start to finish and what the success stories have been. Also, find out what some of the barriers have been as well as what has worked well."

Milestone Description

On 5/26 CHJ connected with Kim to discuss the mentoring initiative. Kim had applied in November 2020 but CHJ had been unable to connect. After a discussion it was determined that TTA would be needed prior to any mentoring. A diversion program does not yet exist for the Brownstown or Jackson police departments and solutions action planning will be needed. A separate TA will be opened separate from mentoring to discuss the basics of FR diversion and potentially help to develop a program plan.
