In October, CSG Justice Center staff along with expert consultant (1) continued to further develop the draft of the Risk Assessment Guidelines document, (2) reviewed notes and feedback from meeting with advocates and people with lived experience, (3) shared survey and reviewed results from the advisory group and are working to incorporate any necessary edits into the guidelines document, and (4) began drafting other deliverables proposed for this project.
In refining the proposed guidelines, CSG Justice Center staff received a suggestion to label each of the guidelines (via color coding or similar) to provide greater specificity in terms of their necessity and timing. The project team put together a brief survey to capture the advisory group’s insights into whether this would be a good approach to integrate into the guidelines. Questions included identifying (a) if the given guideline was considered a key threshold, (b) if the given guideline should take place pre- or post-implementation, or both, and (c) if the given guideline should be considered a continuous quality improvement task. The survey was shared with the advisory group at the beginning of October. Based on the results, most advisory group members deemed the majority of these guidelines as a key threshold. Additionally, there was significant agreement on where the guidelines fall in terms of pre- and post-implementation and continuous quality improvement. Advisory group members shared additional detail in the survey, which are still being reviewed by the project team.
CSG Justice Center staff held multiple team meetings during October to continue to develop the guidelines, as well as additional meetings with working group participants and a participant of the group for advocates and people with lived experience.
CSG Justice Center staff also began drafting additional proposed deliverables, which include (1) a one-page, user-friendly document jurisdictions can use to relay development and validation results in a simple visual manner; (2) a two-page document for the general public, which explains how the guidelines can improve accuracy, fairness, and transparency in risk and needs assessment tools; and (3) the preliminary outline for the companion guide, which will include greater detail regarding the proposed guidelines.
