In September, CSG Justice Center staff along with expert consultant (1) continued to further develop the draft of the Risk Assessment Guidelines document, (2) drafted a survey for the Risk Assessment Guidelines Project Working Group, and (3) hosted a meeting with advocates and people with lived experience.

CSG Justice Center staff held multiple team meetings in September to continue to develop the guidelines, focusing on ensuring that all feedback was incorporated from the responses shared by the advisory group members at the end of August. CSG Justice Center staff submitted the draft of the guidelines document to BJA for initial review. BJA staff were able to review the document for feedback, and held a call with the CSG Justice Center project team to discuss initial thoughts regarding the document, highlight specific review points, and discuss next steps.

CSG Justice Center staff also began to coordinate a meeting with advocates and people with lived experience to start capturing feedback from different focus groups. In preparation for this meeting, CSG Justice Center staff developed materials, planned a presentation, selected and prepared panel members, and worked on meeting logistics (i.e., participant and panel invitations and RSVPs, meeting structure development, scheduling and hosting of virtual meeting, note taking, etc.). CSG Justice Center staff also disseminated a list of the project advisory group members, an official invitation letter from the CSG Justice Center director, bios for advisory group panel members, and the most up-to-date draft version of the guidelines document (reviewed by BJA). Additionally, CSG Justice Center staff created a condensed version of previous project presentation slides to serve as an introduction to the project for the participants, which was presented during the meeting. CSG Justice Center staff also engaged various project advisory group members to become part of a panel to discuss the focus topics of the project—accuracy, fairness, transparency, and effectiveness in communication—and present on how these goals have been visualized by the advisory group and infused into the proposed guidelines.

On September 25, CSG Justice Center staff hosted the meeting with advocates and people with lived experience. The BJA policy staff member assigned to the project attended and shared a few words on behalf of the funder. The virtual presentation focused on an introduction to the work that CSG Justice Center staff are doing through the Risk Assessment Guidelines Project. The presentation included an overview of the state of the field, an overview of the project goals, and an introduction from advisory group panel members regarding the project topics and proposed guidelines. The goal of this meeting was to capture any general feedback advocates and people with lived experience might have as well as specific feedback regarding the project and the proposed guidelines.

CSG Justice Center staff received a suggestion to label each of the guidelines (via color coding or similar) to indicate their necessity and timing. The project team is putting together a brief survey for the advisory group to determine if this is a good approach for the guidelines.
