Evidence based practices in corrections are those practices supported and validated by the research that are strongly linked to reducing recidivism and improved outcomes for clients, as well as enhancing community safety. Case planning is focused on integrating court orders with an assessment process, as well as assessing a client’s stage of change to focus supervision activities on criminogenic needs related to recidivism. Motivational Interviewing is a style of interviewing/assessing/interacting with a person that elicits change talk and increases internal motivation to address behavioral issues that cause harm to victims, communities, families and self. It is collaborative, goal-oriented and focused on moving a person from ambivalence about change in a particular criminogenic need area to a self-discovered stage of change focused on evocation, collaboration and autonomy.

Evidence Based Practices in Corrections/Motivational Interviewing/Case Planning for Corrections Clients

This will be a 3-day training as follows. One day evidence-based practices in corrections, best practices in assessment, case planning and supervision. 2 days of MI training as a refresher for those that have had some MI training in the past and initial training for other staff. MI training will provide an introduction and hands on practice. Integrated into all 3 days will be case planning (probation, reentry and human services will bring at least two client cases to the training) and we will utilize the EBP training and MI training into developing case plans. We will convene at 9 am and
end at 4 pm with a 30-minute lunch provided by Lummi probation. In addition, there will be 4 hours of preparation (prior to the training) and homework in the evenings. The 3-days plus preparation and homework (3 hours) will total 24 hours of training.

Deliverables/Material will cover the following topics:

• Participants will gain a solid understanding of evidence-based practices in corrections
• Participants will learn to jointly develop a case plan (roadmap to success and community safety) and clear supervision expectations – what works in helping clients change behavior and integrating court orders with the assessment process.
• Participants will gain a solid understanding of Motivational Interviewing - a refresher for intermediate/advanced professionals
• Participants new to Motivational Interviewing (beginner training) will learn the principles and practices of MI.
• Participants will focus on and learn skills to employ OARS (Open-ended questions, affirmations, reflective listening, and summarizing) with correctional clients
• Participants will learn to identify, focus and act on change talk - DARNC (desire, ability, reasons, need, commitment and change))
• Participants will learn and be able to create a community of practice to build and support an internal capacity to support institutionalizing evidence based and best practices including MI, EBP and case planning
