Transitioned to virtual 14 week academy due to pandemic. Build foundational skills through this comprehensive and interactive training academy. Examine traditional, evidence-based, victim-centered and trauma informed approaches to community supervision. Practice techniques in mock interviews, scenarios and team exercises. Explore the benefits of restorative practices and cultural resources.

The Tribal Probation Academy is comprised of three sessions, each running one week. The training schedule runs 8:00 am to 4:30 pm Monday through Thursday and 8:00 am to 4:00 pm on Friday for each session. Lunch is provided each day during the academy. The lodging site provides a complimentary hot breakfast each morning. Evening meals will be on your own.

Participants must attend all three sessions in order to obtain a certificate and are responsible for Travel costs. Lodging is provided through BJA funding for Sunday-Friday for each session. Friday evening layover is the responsibility of the part

Upon completion of this academy, you will be able to:
• Employ effective communication techniques with probationers to improve safety and reduce incarceration
• Identify substance abuse, commonly used drugs, and the effects of drugs on behavior
• Apply practical knowledge when supervising high risk offender populations such as probationers with mental illness, domestic violence offenses, sex offenses, or alcohol and substance abuse
• Execute proper officer safety techniques and defensive tactics
• Demonstrate effective report writing techniques
• Apply motivational interviewing practices to promote behavior change

Eligibility Requirement: Applicants must be employed by a tribal agency or if a consultant / contractor, endorsed by a tribal government. Priority is given to active probation personnel.

  2. The organizational and/or community needs specific to the request for TTA services.
  3. The benefits or anticipated outcomes from the receipt of TTA services.

By submitting this application to BJA NTTAC, I understand that upon approval of this application for TTA, the requestor agrees to keep BJA NTTAC informed of any circumstances that may impact the delivery of the TTA, including changes in the date of the event, event cancellation, or difficulties communicating with the assigned TTA provider.
