The Law Enforcement/First Responder Diversion and Referral Mentoring Initiative provides communities interested in starting diversion and/or referral programs the opportunity to learn from established or innovative programs that have shown success in meeting the treatment needs of individuals with a substance use disorder, and in some cases an overdose. There are seven sites that have been chosen to act as mentors for newer programs that are trying to establish a first responder diversion program.
During site visits, mentors will provide opportunities for observation and peer-to-peer exchanges, including opportunities to observe the law enforcement/first responder diversion or referral program in action and allowing mentee sites to engage with program personnel. St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department is interested in participating in the mentoring initiative.

CHJ and St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department conducted the initial call on January 21, 2020, when the site expressed interest in being matched with a mentor site. CHJ paired St. Louis MPD with Pima County's UMatter Program in Tuscon, Arizona, on February 10, 2020. CHJ arranged a call with both sites on April 1. After the mentor site meeting, both CHJ and St. Louis MPD determined that the site would benefit from technical assistance to help with the planning of their program before participating in the mentoring program. CHJ has placed the mentoring request on hold. To date, St. Louis has not applied to technical services. CHJ has moved the mentoring initiative to virtual due to the COVID-19 travel restrictions. After numerous scheduling delays and lack of response, the next call was schedule June 24, 2021. Another call was scheduled for 7/15 but had to be rescheduled due to a conflict on St, Louis's end. The next call (date TBD) will be held with Tucson's treatment provider partner. After this call it will be CHJ's recommendation to complete the mentoring and transition to an intensive TTA with CHJ.
