For many police agencies, body-worn cameras (BWCs) have become an essential tool for enhancing transparency and accountability, as well as a key source of evidence to support criminal investigations and prosecutions. However, very little has been done until now to harness the enormous potential of BWCs as a source of training and evaluation data to improve officer safety and decision-making.
This workshop will present some state-of-the-art training tools and methods developed with funding from the Department of Justice Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) that enable law enforcement agencies to integrate their BWC and training programs. The Patrol Expert cloud-based system was built for BJA to provide a cost-effective digital platform for delivering scenario training in support of the VALOR Officer Safety and Wellness Initiative. Patrol Expert combines e-learning technology, police best practices, and scientific research on human performance and decision-making. The system enables officers to practice and improve core skills essential to effective decision-making in critical, dynamic situations. Patrol Expert also allows police agencies to track and measure officer performance using data that highlights key strengths and weaknesses related to decision-making, officer safety, and use of force.
After completing this workshop, attendees will be able to explain how key concepts from the science of decision-making can be used to systematically turn BWC and other video footage into data-driven training. Attendees will also be able to identify specific steps their agencies can take to obtain greater practical and financial value from their BWC programs.
