Sarah sent a check-in email to Kayla. They are scheduling a lot of case reviews and have a needs assessment survey out. Their sexual assault training field guide should be ready for review at the beginning of August. They are also working through "unfounded" SAKs and making sure any that are actually CODIS eligible get uploaded.
Sarah sent a check-in email to Kayla. She shared:
We are moving along. The Montana Sexual Assault Kit Tracking System is planned to launch beginning of September. So, I have been working to create instructional materials to help users. It seems like Fall is always a busy season. We have our SAKI Task Force Meeting and the Montana Board of Crime Control conference in October. SAKI has a two hour break out session. Case reviews are frequent and going well. The SAKI team was just in Billings this week for a 2 day case review. There were several cases that could be reopened. Then, we are headed to Butte next week for a case review.
There is nothing specific that has come up with rural or tribal areas. I was recently contacted by a jurisdiction to help test evidence from a 1974 rape/murder of a little girl. So, with BJA approval, we are going to fund the attempt to get DNA extraction done. Hopefully they can get enough DNA.
