Kids Camp took place from June 28th – 30th in Bradford Woods, IN. Forty-seven Comfort Zone Campers, ages 7-17, and 8 Camp Hal campers, ages 4-6. Camp provides bereavement services to children who have suffered the loss of a close family member by providing camp programs that seek to build the child’s confidence and help him/her develop positive coping skills for use in daily life. On Friday, escorted by fire trucks and the Indiana Patriot Guard Riders Motorcycle Group, all campers and their parents arrived at the Bradford Woods Camp. They attended an evening orientation and enjoyed dinner. Comfort Zone Campers attended age-bases support groups, “Healing Circles”, which are led by licensed grief therapist throughout the weekend. “Big Buddies” (adult volunteer’s, screened and trained), serve as mentors and each camper is paired with a “big buddy” for the duration of camp. Together they participated in an array of traditional camp activities such as challenge courses, arts and crafts, and games. Saturday morning after breakfast at the hotel in Blooming, the Camp Hal children attended camp activities which included play therapy, (play therapy is a psychotherapeutic approach primarily used to help children ages 3 to 12 explore their lives and freely express repressed thoughts and emotions through play). While the little campers were “fishing for feelings”, parents gathered to discussed struggles and strategies for one another in dealing with grief. After lunch, Camp Hal Campers and Parents enjoyed family activities together. All parents were free for dinner, while NFFF staff hosted the little campers for dinner and movies. Sunday morning Camp Hal campers prepared for the CZC Memorial Service, which is the closing ceremony where all campers perform skits in remembrance of their loved ones. The support from the City of Bloomington Fire Department, the Marion Township Rural Fire Department and the Marion County Sheriff’s Office was outstanding.
