In February, CSG Justice Center staff traveled to New Mexico twice to provide state leaders with information related to the Justice Reinvestment process, findings, and policy recommendations considered by the New Mexico Justice Reinvestment Working Group. Having reached consensus to advance endorsed policy recommendations, legislative champions introduced House Bill (HB) 533 and HB 564, which reflect the Justice Reinvestment policy framework.
The first site visit focused on educating and sharing information with state leaders regarding the probation and parole practices of other states. During this site visit, CSG Justice Center staff met with Probation and Parole Director and separately with various State to provide additional research and information on best practices related to probation and parole. CSG Justice Center staff also provided information about available trainings and tools for improving community supervision.
During the second site visit, CSG Justice Center staff educated House Judiciary Committee members on the Justice Reinvestment process, presented analysis of New Mexico’s probation and parole system, and outlined the policy recommendations considered by the New Mexico Justice Reinvestment Working Group. During this visit, CSG Justice Center staff met separately with several legislative champions to discuss the research supporting the Justice Reinvestment policy framework and potential impact on New Mexico’s prison system if such policies were adopted by New Mexico.

In February, CSG Justice Center research staff focused on projecting the impacts of the proposed policy options and preparing for legislative committee hearings. Research staff also revised analysis of prison, case, and sentencing data based on feedback from local stakeholders and assisted with the development of a document outlining policy recommendations for New Mexico.
