This presentation reviews the different types of drugs (drug and alcohol) and the effects they have on infants in utero and after they are born. The presenter discusses the financial impact that this has on the community and state. We also discuss opportunities for prevention and reduction through contraception. We offer suggestions for collaboration between departments to help a team approach for care. -
Bio:
Dr. Ashley Bayer has been a pediatrician for the Seminole Tribe of Florida for almost three years and has presented on this topic regarding drug and alcohol exposure in utero at the Annual Wellness Conference as well as the National Indian Child Welfare Association Conference in 2014. Prior to working for the tribe, Dr. Bayer completed her pediatric residency training at the Tampa General Hospital in Tampa, Florida and all Children’s Hospital / John Hopkins Medical Medicine in St. Petersburg, Florida. Dr. Bayer completed her pediatric internship at at Arnold Palmer and Winnie Palmer Hospital in Orlando, FL. Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women and Babies delivers over 14,000 babies per year. The exposure to multiple hospitals and geographic locations in the state, and more recently for the tribe, has given Dr. Bayer a vast breadth of experience in the topic of drug and alcohol exposure in utero.
