The Memphis, Tennessee Public Safety Partnership site requested a holistic assessment of the Shelby County, Tennessee District Attorney’s Office (SCDAGO) and a report detailing recommendations and best practices in the following areas: office organization and structure; office culture and environment; case processing and quality of work; and training and evaluation. Under a previous SOW, the Prosecutors Center for Excellence conducted three site visits to SCDAGO and identified additional data to assess, stakeholders to interview, and processes for enhancement. As a continuation of that work and under this new SOW, PCE will conduct two additional site visits to SCDAGO to research, analyze, and offer recommendations to SCDAGO. PCE will develop a written report that includes recommendations related to increased efficiency and improved performance, including references to best practices and national standards; staffing changes for the office; and additional, in-depth inquiries into prosecutor practices.
The Shelby County District Attorney’s office is responsible for prosecuting all juvenile and adult violations of state criminal law that occur in Shelby County, Tennessee. Our total staff consists of 227 employees funded by the State of Tennessee, Shelby County or federal grants. We employ 112 Assistant District Attorneys who, on average, handle over 220,000 misdemeanors and felonies annually and staff over 24 courtrooms daily. We are also engaged in a variety of efforts beyond the courthouse tailored toward prevention, intervention and enforcement.
Our goal is to improve public safety and the lives of the citizens of Shelby County. The general organization and functioning of this office have not changed drastically over the last 25 years. However, the demands on this office and the role we play in the overall strength of this community have increased. We must be structured and functioning in the best possible way to meet those increasing needs.
