Course Information:
There are no bad crime analyst units; there are only agencies who are bad at hiring and using crime analysts. Just like any other police division, if the crime analysis personnel are or are not functioning properly it is likely due to leadership and/or the agency’s ability to hire the right person. Analysts are not cops. In policing we generally hire people and train them up. We have a belief that we can do the same for analysts. This is usually not the case. Police agencies specialize in creating officers, we have State POSTS, training divisions/officer, Field Officer Training programs and a host of other resources dedicated to building officers. This makes us think we can build other jobs in the organization, but we don’t have the same resources, experience and most police don’t even have a solid understanding of an analyst’s job.
