The Lansing MI Police Dept. is requesting training for their officers/dispatchers and some other civilian staff/department heads. The two 2-day Blue Courage Courses are intended to train and educate the command staff of the department. Blue Courage is a synergistic blend of education, principles, practices, skills, and tools that go beyond the classroom environment to foster a culture of leadership, character, nobility and service. Blue Courage focuses on both training to develop officer safety skills and education to enhance mindfulness and deepen awareness, intention and self-control. Attendees will learn to effectively manage stress, and minimize the confrontational aspect of policing by learning to police and de-escalate through influence rather than control and confrontation. The goals include: 1) increasing respect, trust, and collaboration levels between police and the community; and 2) making appropriate decisions on use of force and enforcement based on objectivity and fairness rather than personal bias. The Blue Courage areas of emphasis and teachings include: police culture, nobility of policing, respect, resilience, positive psychology, practical wisdom, deliberate practice, health and wellness, courage, and legacy. Blue Courage reignites passion and re-engages officers; a common refrain from attendees is, “you reminded me of why I became a police officer.” Blue Courage addresses the “Whole Person”—physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual—areas which have long been known to be foundational to human development. There will be one course on December 18-19, and another on December 20-21. The courses will be instructed by Howard Powers.
