As required by the grant, the National Governors Association leads monthly conference with criminal justice policy advisors (CJPAs) on policy challenges, emerging state issues, and best practices. Calls have taken place the 4th Thursday of every month beginning in July, 2016 and average 10 – 25 callers on each call. Topics are as follows: July 28, 2016: The movement towards violence as a health issue (briefing by CURE Violence) August 25, 2016: National scan of recent state criminal justice legislation (briefing by VERA institute) October 27, 2016: Workplace safety and staff assaults in prisons (academic briefing) December 22, 2016: Recap of crime rates in 2016 (briefing by Brennan Center) January 26, 2017: scan of state criminal justice budgets (briefing by NASBO) February 23, 2017: public safety considerations due to the increase in traffic fatalities (academic briefing) March 23, 2017: federal update from DOJ regarding PREA updates for states (briefing from PREA management office) April 27, 2017: FirstNet updates (briefing from FirstNet reps) May 25, 2017: human trafficking (academic briefing) June 22, 2017: Updates regarding NIBRS (briefing from FBI) July 27, 2017: Nevada Juvenile Justice Reform Efforts (briefing from Governor Sandoval’s office and CSG); July 27, 2017: Juvenile Justice Reform efforts in Nevada with presenters from the Office of Governor Sandoval and Council of State Governments; August 24, 2017: Female Incarceration Rates with Dr. Emily Salisbury of the University of Nevada Las Vegas; September 28, 2017: Correctional Programming Outcomes, with Dr. Grant Duwe, Minnesota Department of Corrections; October 26, 2017: Jail Incarceration Rates with a presenter from the Vera Institute of Justice; December 21, 2017: State Pretrial Reform Efforts, with a presenter from the Pretrial Justice Institute; and January 25, 2018: Best Practices on Recruitment, Retention, and Turnover of Law Enforcement Personnel, with W. Dwayne Orrick of the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police.
