The requested TTA is to provide the logistical support necessary to allow subject matter experts with knowledge of both criminal justice professions and diversity issues to participate by leading workshops for participants.
We would also like to request additional logistical support to engage two (2) leading members of the criminal justice community, who are also people of color, to serve as our opening and keynote speakers, respectively.
Criminal justice professionals of color, particularly those from the African-American and LatinX communities, often face unique challenges in their efforts to discharge the duties of their offices. These challenges stem from their dual situation within both their ethnic/cultural communities, and their criminal justice professional communities - which can find themselves at odds.
These external pressures can be exacerbated by internal challenges faced within professional environments; particularly in terms of barriers to professional growth and career advancement linked to the ongoing effects of implicit structural discrimination within criminal justice organizations.

The assistance provided aided in the procurement of subject matter experts who led workshops targeted at addressing various elements of correctional professionals' health.
These individuals also served as participants in a moderated plenary session panel discussion and Q&A period.

The 2017 People of Color in Criminal Justice Conference was so well-received by attendees and the event organizers that the decision was made to continue it as an annual event. The 2018 conference will seek to increase both the total number of attendees (173 in 2017) and media coverage of the event.
